Abstract:
This study explores the influence of servant leadership on job satisfaction and retention of lecturers in Osun State-owned higher institutions. Servant leadership is a leadership approach that emphasizes the leader’s commitment to serving the needs of their followers and promoting their personal and professional growth. Job satisfaction and retention are crucial factors in the academic sector as they impact the quality of education and the overall functioning of higher institutions.

The study employs a mixed-methods research design, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. The target population consists of lecturers working in Osun State-owned higher institutions. The quantitative data is collected using a standardized questionnaire that measures servant leadership behaviors, job satisfaction levels, and intentions to stay or leave the institution. The qualitative data is gathered through in-depth interviews to gain a deeper understanding of the lecturers’ perspectives on servant leadership and its impact on their job satisfaction and retention.

The findings of this study will contribute to the existing literature on servant leadership, job satisfaction, and retention in the context of higher education. It is expected that servant leadership practices will positively influence lecturers’ job satisfaction levels and increase their desire to remain in their current positions. The study also aims to identify specific servant leadership behaviors that have the most significant impact on job satisfaction and retention.

The implications of this research are significant for educational institutions, particularly in Osun State. By understanding the relationship between servant leadership, job satisfaction, and retention, institutions can adopt effective leadership strategies that enhance the overall work environment and support lecturers’ professional and personal development. This, in turn, can lead to increased job satisfaction, higher retention rates, and improved educational outcomes.

The study’s findings can guide policymakers, administrators, and leaders in Osun State-owned higher institutions in designing and implementing servant leadership development programs and policies. By fostering a servant leadership culture, institutions can create an environment that promotes job satisfaction and encourages lecturers to remain committed to their roles, ultimately contributing to the advancement of higher education in the state.
