Abstract:
In today’s rapidly evolving educational landscape, university administrators face numerous challenges in making informed decisions that drive institutional growth and success. To support effective decision-making, administrators increasingly rely on Management Information Systems (MIS) for collecting and analyzing relevant data. This study focuses on the data collection methods employed by university administrators in South East Nigeria universities, with specific emphasis on the MIS role in the decision-making process.

The research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing interviews and surveys to gather data from university administrators, faculty members, and IT professionals. The study explores the current data collection methods used by administrators and investigates the role of MIS in processing and analyzing the collected data. Additionally, the research examines the challenges encountered in the data collection process and explores potential solutions to enhance the effectiveness of MIS implementation.

Preliminary findings indicate that South East Nigeria universities primarily employ a combination of manual and electronic data collection methods. While traditional methods such as paper-based surveys and face-to-face interviews are still prevalent, digital tools like online surveys, data analytics software, and student information systems are gaining prominence. The MIS plays a crucial role in aggregating, organizing, and presenting data to administrators, enabling them to make data-driven decisions.

However, the study also highlights several challenges faced by university administrators in the data collection process. These challenges include inadequate technological infrastructure, limited data literacy among stakeholders, and a lack of standardized data collection procedures. To address these issues, the research suggests the need for comprehensive training programs to enhance data literacy among administrators and stakeholders, investment in robust IT infrastructure, and the establishment of clear data collection guidelines.

The findings of this study contribute to the existing literature on MIS and decision-making processes in the context of South East Nigeria universities. The research underscores the importance of leveraging MIS for efficient data collection and analysis, enabling administrators to make informed decisions that positively impact the university’s overall performance. By identifying the challenges and proposing solutions, this study offers valuable insights for university administrators, policymakers, and researchers seeking to enhance the data-driven decision-making process in higher education institutions.
