Abstract:
This abstract provides an overview of the research conducted to examine the relationship between over-schooling and students’ achievement in the curriculum content of junior secondary education. Over-schooling refers to the phenomenon where students are subjected to excessive academic pressure and curriculum demands beyond their developmental readiness and capabilities.
The aim of this study was to explore the potential negative effects of over-schooling on students’ achievement in the curriculum content of junior secondary education and to identify effective strategies for managing this relationship. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews and observations.
The research findings revealed that over-schooling had a detrimental impact on students’ achievement in the curriculum content of junior secondary education. Students who experienced excessive academic pressure and workload were more likely to exhibit high levels of stress, burnout, and disengagement. These factors, in turn, negatively affected their motivation, learning outcomes, and overall academic performance.
To manage the relationship between over-schooling and students’ achievement, several strategies were identified. First, it is crucial for educational institutions to review and revise curriculum standards and expectations to ensure they align with students’ developmental needs and capabilities. This involves creating a balanced and age-appropriate curriculum that focuses on holistic development rather than solely emphasizing academic achievement.
Second, fostering a supportive learning environment is essential. Schools should prioritize the well-being and mental health of students by promoting stress-management techniques, providing counseling services, and encouraging a healthy work-life balance.
Third, collaboration between educators, parents, and policymakers is crucial to address the issue of over-schooling. It requires open communication channels and shared responsibility to ensure that students’ educational experiences are well-rounded and not solely focused on academic performance.
In conclusion, the findings of this research highlight the negative consequences of over-schooling on students’ achievement in the curriculum content of junior secondary education. By implementing effective strategies to manage this relationship, educational stakeholders can create an environment that promotes optimal learning outcomes, student well-being, and holistic development.
