GENERIC SKILL ACQUISITION AND THE REALIZATION OF THE GOALS OF BUSINESS EDUCATION IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES: IMPLICATIONS FOR CURRICULUM INNOVATION

ABSTRACT

This research project aims to explore the role of generic skill acquisition in realizing the goals of business education in Nigerian universities and its implications for curriculum innovation. Business education plays a vital role in preparing students for the demands of the workforce and equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge for success in a dynamic business environment. However, there is an increasing recognition of the importance of generic skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, teamwork, and adaptability, in addition to subject-specific knowledge. This study seeks to investigate the extent to which generic skills are integrated into business education curricula, examine their impact on student outcomes, identify challenges in their integration, and propose recommendations for curriculum innovation to enhance the acquisition and application of these skills.

A mixed-methods research design will be employed, utilizing surveys, interviews, and curriculum analysis to collect data from business education faculty members, students, employers, and curriculum experts in Nigerian universities. The research objectives include assessing the incorporation of generic skills in business education curricula, examining the impact of these skills on student outcomes, identifying challenges in their integration, and proposing recommendations for curriculum innovation.

The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the role of generic skill acquisition in realizing the goals of business education in Nigerian universities. The research will assess the extent to which generic skills are integrated into business education curricula, including the identification of specific skills addressed and the methods used for their development and assessment. It will examine the impact of these skills on student outcomes, such as employability, job performance, and entrepreneurial success. Additionally, the study will identify challenges faced in integrating generic skills into the curriculum, including limited resources, resistance to change, and the need for faculty development. Furthermore, the research will propose recommendations for curriculum innovation, such as the inclusion of experiential learning opportunities, interdisciplinary approaches, industry collaborations, and the use of technology-enhanced learning methods.

The implications of this research extend to business education faculty members, students, employers, policymakers, and curriculum developers. The findings will provide business education faculty members with insights into the importance of integrating generic skills into the curriculum, enabling them to enhance teaching and assessment methods and improve student outcomes. Students can benefit from the research findings by understanding the value of acquiring generic skills alongside subject-specific knowledge and developing strategies to enhance their skill acquisition. Employers can utilize the research findings to inform their recruitment and talent development strategies, recognizing the significance of generic skills in the workplace. Policymakers and curriculum developers can leverage the research findings to inform policies and initiatives that promote curriculum innovation, ensuring the alignment of business education with the needs of the labor market
