THE MENTORSHIP IN BUSINESS EDUCATION AND STUDENTS’ ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT IN DELTA STATE

ABSTRACT

This research project aims to examine the role of mentorship in business education and its impact on students’ entrepreneurial skills development in Delta State, Nigeria. Mentorship programs play a crucial role in nurturing and guiding students towards successful entrepreneurship by providing them with guidance, support, and real-world insights. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of mentorship programs in business education, identify key factors that contribute to successful mentorship experiences, and explore the impact of mentorship on students’ entrepreneurial skills development.

A mixed-methods research design will be employed, combining surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions to collect data from business education students, educators, and mentors in Delta State. The research objectives include assessing the availability and utilization of mentorship programs in business education, examining the qualities and characteristics of effective mentors, and evaluating the impact of mentorship on students’ entrepreneurial skills development. The study will also explore the challenges and opportunities associated with mentorship programs and gather recommendations for improving their effectiveness.

The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the role of mentorship in business education and its impact on students’ entrepreneurial skills development in Delta State. The research will evaluate the availability and utilization of mentorship programs, including their structure, duration, and integration into the curriculum. It will also identify the qualities and characteristics of effective mentors, such as industry expertise, interpersonal skills, and commitment to student development. Furthermore, the study will assess the impact of mentorship on students’ entrepreneurial skills development, including their knowledge acquisition, self-confidence, networking abilities, and business start-up intentions. Additionally, the research will identify the challenges and opportunities associated with mentorship programs, such as limited mentor availability, inadequate training for mentors, and the need for institutional support. The recommendations gathered from stakeholders will provide insights for improving mentorship effectiveness and enhancing students’ entrepreneurial skills development.

The implications of this research extend to educational institutions, policymakers, business educators, mentors, and students. The findings will provide educational institutions with insights into the importance of mentorship in business education and the potential benefits for students’ entrepreneurial skills development. Policymakers can utilize the research findings to inform policies and initiatives that promote the integration of mentorship programs into business education curricula. Business educators can leverage the research findings to design and implement effective mentorship programs that enhance students’ entrepreneurial skills development. Mentors can benefit from the research findings by understanding the qualities and characteristics that contribute to successful mentorship experiences. Additionally, students can use the research findings to seek out mentorship opportunities and actively engage in their entrepreneurial skills development.
