APPLYING THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF BIOPHILIC DESIGN TO PRIESTS’ RETIREMENT FACILITIES IN SOUTH EASTERN NIGERIA
Abstract:
This abstract proposes the application of biophilic design principles to priests’ retirement facilities in South Eastern Nigeria, with the aim of enhancing the health and well-being of retired priests. Biophilic design refers to the incorporation of natural elements and patterns into the built environment, promoting a connection with nature and its beneficial effects on human health.
Retirement facilities for priests play a crucial role in providing a comfortable and supportive environment for individuals who have dedicated their lives to spiritual service. However, the design and function of these facilities often neglect the potential positive impact of nature-inspired design elements. By integrating biophilic design principles, a more holistic and nurturing environment can be created, fostering physical, mental, and emotional well-being among retired priests.
This research explores the specific health benefits of biophilic design, including stress reduction, improved cognitive function, enhanced emotional well-being, and increased physical activity. It further examines the cultural and environmental context of South Eastern Nigeria to identify suitable biophilic design elements that align with local traditions and natural surroundings.
Potential biophilic design strategies for priests’ retirement facilities may include incorporating abundant natural lighting, providing views of outdoor green spaces, integrating indoor plants and water features, using natural materials and textures, and creating spaces for outdoor activities and contemplation. These elements can promote a sense of calmness, connection, and rejuvenation, which are particularly important for the well-being of retired priests.
The implementation of biophilic design principles in priests’ retirement facilities in South Eastern Nigeria has the potential to enhance the quality of life for retired priests, supporting their physical and mental health during their later years. This abstract calls for further research and collaboration between architects, designers, and stakeholders to develop practical guidelines and recommendations for integrating biophilic design into the planning and construction of retirement facilities for priests in the region. By doing so, we can create environments that honor the spiritual legacy of retired priests while providing them with a nurturing and healing space for their well-deserved retirement.
