EFFECT OF DEEP CONCEPTUAL AND THINK-PAIR-SHARE STRATEGIES ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN THE BIOLOGICAL CONCEPT OF BLOOD CIRCULATION IN AWKA METROPOLIS

Abstract:
This study investigates the impact of utilizing deep conceptual and Think-Pair-Share (TPS) strategies on students’ academic achievement in the biological concept of blood circulation in Awka Metropolis. The study aims to determine if these instructional approaches enhance students’ understanding and retention of the complex topic of blood circulation.

The research adopts a quasi-experimental design, with two groups of students from selected secondary schools in Awka Metropolis. The experimental group receives instruction using deep conceptual and TPS strategies, while the control group follows the conventional teaching method. Pre-test and post-test assessments are administered to both groups to measure their academic achievement.

The deep conceptual strategy encourages students to delve into the underlying principles and mechanisms of blood circulation, promoting a deeper understanding of the topic. TPS strategy involves collaborative learning, where students work in pairs to discuss and share their thoughts, facilitating active engagement and knowledge construction.

The findings of the study are expected to demonstrate the impact of these strategies on students’ academic achievement. It is hypothesized that students in the experimental group will exhibit greater improvement in their academic performance compared to those in the control group.

The study also considers factors such as students’ prior knowledge, motivation, and attitudes towards biology, which may influence the effectiveness of the instructional strategies. Surveys and questionnaires are utilized to collect data on these variables.

The implications of this study extend to biology educators, curriculum developers, and policymakers, providing evidence-based insights on effective instructional strategies for teaching complex biological concepts. By enhancing students’ academic achievement in blood circulation, educators can foster a solid foundation for broader understanding of human physiology and biology.
