NATURAL LIGHTING AND THE ARCHITECTURE OF AN INDOOR SWIMMING POOL AT NNAMDI AZIKIWE UNIVERSITY, AWKA, ANAMBRA STATE

Abstract:
This abstract provides an overview of the research project focused on exploring the integration of natural lighting in the architectural design of an indoor swimming pool at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, located in Awka, Anambra State. The aim of the study is to investigate how natural lighting can be effectively utilized to enhance the indoor environment of the swimming pool facility, creating a visually appealing and sustainable space.

The research project recognizes the importance of natural lighting in architectural design, particularly in indoor spaces such as swimming pools. Natural lighting offers numerous benefits, including energy efficiency, improved visual comfort, enhanced user experience, and the promotion of a healthy indoor environment. By harnessing the potential of natural light, the design of the indoor swimming pool can be optimized to create an inviting and pleasant atmosphere for both swimmers and spectators.

The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative research methods. The research team will conduct an extensive literature review to explore existing theories, principles, and best practices related to natural lighting in indoor spaces. Additionally, on-site observations, surveys, and interviews will be conducted to gather data on user preferences, lighting requirements, and spatial experiences.

Based on the findings, the research project will propose design recommendations and strategies for integrating natural lighting into the architecture of the indoor swimming pool at Nnamdi Azikiwe University. These recommendations may include the incorporation of large windows, skylights, light shelves, and other daylighting techniques. The proposed design interventions will aim to maximize the utilization of natural light while minimizing potential drawbacks such as glare and heat gain.

The expected outcomes of this research project include the development of guidelines for architects and designers to create indoor swimming pool facilities that optimize natural lighting. The findings will contribute to the body of knowledge regarding sustainable design practices and promote the adoption of environmentally friendly strategies in architectural projects.

Overall, this research project seeks to explore the potential of natural lighting in enhancing the architecture of an indoor swimming pool at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State. By leveraging the benefits of natural light, the aim is to create a visually appealing, energy-efficient, and sustainable environment that promotes the well-being and enjoyment of the users.
